"The Real First Aid Kit"

One time, while we were on an outreach shift with SJA, Long was packing up the first aid kit and noticed all the extra supplies—bandages, gauze, the works. He grinned and said, “You know what’s missing in here? Snacks. That’s the real first aid kit.” We both cracked up, and from then on, whenever we prepped for an event, I’d joke about sneaking granola bars and other junk food into the kit.

That was classic Long - always practical, always looking out for everyone, and making sure we didn’t take ourselves too seriously. Little moments like that made even the longest shifts something to look forward to.

Long’s contribution, dedication and talent have made a sizable impact with St. John Ambulance and all those he taught and worked with. He will be sorely missed.

Unfortunately I did not meet Long until recently, but the times we were together meant a lot. He was an awesome instructor for the 1st aid classes and just an all-round great person. He will be greatly missed by so many. My condolences and prayer.

When I knew nothing about SJA, Long taught me everything he knew. Long taught me how to do slings, how to do CPR, how to explain that we're not police officers and everything in between. My first Few Outreach shifts, It was just Long and I. I  listened and watched Long work his magic on members of the public, and then I copied what he said and did. I never knew back then that he would be my personal choice for first aid instructor for ten years!

To date, the only TV celebrity photo I have from an SJA event was because of Long. We were at a pep rally and I was telling him how I recognized the celebrity (Carlos from YTV). And Long said, " well. let's go. We're in uniform! No man left behind" As we were walking over, he was telling me about another celebrity encounter with Dog the Bounty Hunter. We got close to the barriers separating Carlos from fans. Carlos was there and hundreds of middle school children were screaming his name. Long shouted one single, “Carlos" and he somehow heard it and came directly for us. Photo Acquired and memory treasured.

Thanks for the Guidance, memories, kindness and blessings brother.
